Making analogue work for a very digital world.

There’s something slightly ridiculous about making an animation with a knitting machine when you could probably make the same thing on a laptop in an afternoon.
Which is exactly why Alex Khabbazi’s work is so good.
He prints, knits, etches, scans, cuts and experiments with whatever happens to make sense for an idea. One project involved turning animation frames into knitting patterns. Another was printed onto a receipt roll. He has worked with metal plates, textiles and old printing processes - basically anything that gives the final image a little resistance.
Khabbazi originally studied architecture before realising that the rules weren’t really for him. Graphic design and art gave him more room to mess around, and that messing around eventually became the whole point.
His work still ends up on Instagram, album covers and screens. It just doesn’t look like it started there.
And maybe that’s why it stands out.
There is so much perfectly clean digital work around now that seeing something with an actual texture, mistake or strange little edge feels almost unusual.
Alex doesn’t choose the easiest way.
And we really like that.
