Your feed is more personal than your think

The things we watch every day don’t disappear when we close the app. They shape what feels normal, desirable, frightening - and eventually, a little bit of who we become

We tend to think of content as something we watch, read or scroll. But when we spend enough time with the same images, ideas and voices they start to shape what feels normal without us noticing.


There is a strange moment that happens after you spend too much time online.

You close the app, put your phone down, and technically nothing has changed. Your room is the same. Your life is the same. But somehow you feel different.

Maybe everyone suddenly seems more successful than you. Maybe your clothes feel boring. Maybe the world feels slightly more frightening. Maybe you have developed an oddly specific opinion about something you had never thought about two weeks ago.


It is tempting to treat this as meaningless. After all, it was only content.


But “only content” can add up to several hours of images, voices, headlines and ideas every day. And psychologists have spent decades studying what repeated exposure does to the way we pay attention, compare ourselves with other people and decide what feels believable.


The answer is not that Instagram is secretly controlling our minds. The research is much more complicated than that.


But it does suggest something worth paying attention to: what we repeatedly consume becomes part of the environment our mind is adapting to.

And environments matter.


We practise attention without realising it

Most of us talk about attention as if it was a personality trait.


Someone has a good attention span. Someone else “cannot focus.” We blame ourselves, our discipline, our phones.


But attention is also something we practise.


In 2009, researchers at Stanford University studied people who frequently switched between different forms of media. Heavy media multitaskers had more difficulty ignoring irrelevant information during several cognitive tasks than people who multitasked less.


The study did not prove that multitasking caused those differences. It is possible that people who are naturally more distractible are simply more likely to use several forms of media at once.


Still, the finding raises an interesting question.


What happens when the dominant form of entertainment in our lives constantly asks us to switch?


A film asks you to stay with one story for two hours. A book might ask you to follow the same argument for thirty pages. Short-form feeds ask for something else entirely: look, react, swipe, reset. Look, react, swipe, reset.


There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Sometimes you want fifteen minutes of stupid videos. That is part of being alive.


The problem is when one way of paying attention starts to become the only one we practise.


Your feed can change what feels normal

Social media has also radically expanded the number of people we can compare ourselves with.


A few generations ago, your comparison group was relatively small. Friends, classmates, people from work, neighbours, maybe celebrities in magazines.


Now you can wake up and, before getting out of bed, see a model in Copenhagen, a twenty-one-year-old founder in New York, someone’s villa in Lake Como, a girl with perfect skin in Seoul and a stranger showing you everything she bought that month.


Your brain knows these people are selected by an algorithm.


But knowing something intellectually does not necessarily stop you from reacting to it emotionally.


A 2016 experiment by researchers Zoe Brown and Marika Tiggemann looked at exactly this. Female university students were shown Instagram images of attractive celebrities, attractive peers or travel destinations.


Women who saw the celebrity and peer images reported greater body dissatisfaction and worse mood afterward than those who saw travel images.


What I find most interesting is that the effect was not limited to celebrities.


Peers mattered too.


Perhaps more, in a way, because they feel possible.


The difference between “that is a supermodel” and “that is a normal girl my age” is psychologically important. Social media constantly blurs that boundary.


Exceptional lives are presented without labels saying exceptional.


An apartment worth millions simply appears as someone’s morning routine. A body maintained through genetics, professional training, lighting and editing arrives as an outfit video. An unusual level of wealth becomes a background detail.


Eventually, extraordinary things can start to feel strangely ordinary.


And once they feel ordinary, your own perfectly normal life can begin to feel insufficient.


Bad news is particularly good at getting our attention

There is also a reason it can be much easier to spend forty minutes reading about disasters than forty minutes reading genuinely good news.


Negative information attracts us.


A large 2019 study led by political scientist Stuart Soroka tested people’s reactions to television news across 17 countries. Researchers measured physiological responses while participants watched both positive and negative news stories.


On average, negative stories produced stronger physiological reactions.


There was plenty of individual variation, not everyone responded in exactly the same way. But the overall pattern was surprisingly consistent.


Our attention is sensitive to potential threats.


That makes evolutionary sense. Missing a nice thing is unfortunate. Missing a dangerous thing can be much worse.


The problem is that a brain developed for a limited physical environment now has access to every alarming event occurring almost anywhere on Earth.


You can wake up in a safe bedroom and expose yourself to war, murder, financial panic, political conflict, disease and disaster before breakfast.


That information may all be real.


But its concentration is not.


Researchers studying the psychological aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings found that greater exposure to media coverage of the attack was associated with greater acute stress. People who consumed six or more hours of bombing-related coverage a day reported especially high levels of distress.


That does not mean watching the news automatically caused the distress; distressed people may also have watched more coverage.


But it does challenge the idea that witnessing something through a screen has no psychological effect simply because we were not physically there.


Being informed matters.


Being continuously immersed in distressing information is something different.


Familiar is not the same as true

There is another effect that feels almost embarrassingly simple:

The more often we encounter a statement, the more believable it can begin to feel.


Psychologists call this the illusory truth effect.


In a 2018 study, Gordon Pennycook, Tyrone Cannon and David Rand showed participants false-news headlines presented in a social-media format.


Seeing a headline just once before made participants more likely to rate it as accurate when they encountered it again.


Once.


That is particularly interesting now because online repetition rarely looks like literal repetition.


You probably will not see the exact same sentence fifteen times.


Instead, an idea appears in a TikTok. Then somebody mentions it on a podcast. Then you see a tweet about it. A week later there is an Instagram carousel explaining the same thing.


Different format. Different person. Same underlying claim.


Eventually you forget where you first heard it.

You simply know you have heard it before.

And familiarity can feel a lot like knowledge.


Sometimes you notice the influence only when it disappears

One of the most interesting social-media experiments did something very simple: researchers paid people to stop using Facebook.


Before the 2018 US midterm elections, economists Hunt Allcott, Luca Braghieri, Sarah Eichmeyer and Matthew Gentzkow randomly assigned some participants to deactivate Facebook for four weeks.


The results were not dramatic enough to support the idea that social media is either completely terrible or completely wonderful.


People who stopped using Facebook spent more time on some offline activities and reported slightly higher subjective well-being. They also became less informed about current political news.


That is the point.


Social media really does give us things.


It introduces us to artists, writers and ideas we might never have encountered otherwise. It can teach us something in thirty seconds that we would never have thought to search for. It lets niche communities exist. It can be funny and beautiful and genuinely inspiring.


The same environment can also make us anxious, distracted or convinced that everybody except us is somehow living correctly.


Both can be true.


The question is not whether content is “good” or “bad”

I don’t think the solution is turning your phone grayscale, deleting every app and consuming nothing except nineteenth-century literature.


That becomes another performance.


And there is something slightly depressing about treating every moment of culture as if it has to be productive.


Sometimes a stupid reality show is exactly what you need.


The more useful question is probably simpler:

How do I usually feel after spending time with this?

Not just after one post, but after few weeks.

Some accounts make you curious, some make you want to make things, some teach you how other people think, some make the world feel bigger.

Others somehow leave you feeling poorer, uglier, angrier or behind, despite never explicitly telling you that you should.


That difference is what really matters.


We are usually extremely selective about what enters our bodies and surprisingly unselective about what enters our heads.


People read ingredient lists, compare skincare formulations and argue about whether oat milk is inflammatory, then spend three hours absorbing whatever an algorithm decided would keep them looking at a screen.


Maybe our informational environment deserves at least some of the same attention.


Think like an editor

The word curation has become annoying because it is now used to describe everything from wardrobes to brunch.

But its original idea is useful here.

Editors do not include everything available - they select. They decide what deserves space, what needs context and what does not belong at all.


We can probably do the same with our attention:

  • Follow the person whose work genuinely makes you think.

  • Mute the person you inexplicably compare yourself with every morning.

  • Read the article before reading forty opinions about the article.

  • Spend enough time with one subject to develop your own opinion instead of borrowing the consensus of whichever corner of the internet found you first.

And sometimes allow yourself to be bored enough to notice what you actually think when nobody else is talking.


Because content does not need to dramatically brainwash us to influence us.

Its effects can be much quieter.

It can change what we notice first.

What we expect other people’s lives to look like.

What kinds of bodies appear normal.

Which problems feel enormous.

Which ideas feel familiar.

Which ambitions even occur to us.

You do not become everything you consume.


But some of it stays.


And perhaps the most useful question is not How much content am I consuming?

It is:


What am I letting in and how it affects me?
